This year my marks my firm’s 25th year and tomorrow is Administrative Assistants day. These are the stories about the people who make up the firm.

Some references are to individual contributions, some reference acts of determination that are repeated so often by so many over a span of years that they have become the hallmark of our practice and serve as a reminder of what can be accomplished when people deeply care about what they do. This is a tribute to all the great people who have shown up and been counted.

You were there the day I went into labor, counting my contractions, nervous that my water would break and I would still be in the office working. When I had the baby and returned to work, you insisted I go home and take a proper maternity leave.

You were there at the very beginning: two small rooms in the basement of an office building. You taught me everything I didn’t know about running an office. “Yes Nancy, the envelopes have to be addressed by typewriter, not handwritten.” “What’s the policy for snow days, sick days, personal days?”

You were there the day I forgot to bring oranges for the basketball team- you ran to the store, cut up the oranges and delivered them to the high school bus.

You were there the day I forgot to pick the kids up from camp, you picked them up and took them for ice cream.

You were there the day my mother died. It was because of you that I took care of my mother and said goodbye. Because of you, I was able to be a good daughter.

You were there when my family needed me. Because of you, I was able to be a good mother.

You were there when my husband was hospitalized and needed me. Because of you, I was a good wife.

You were there for 9/11- we carried on in fear, numb to the pain, supporting one another.

You were there when we had a deadline to file papers. You made copies, corrected grammar and misspellings and filed the papers on time.

You were there for Hurricane Sandy- a whole army showed up with flashlights, cell phones, and ready to work. We set up generators and makeshift offices in a vacant building.

You were there when I needed to hear the truth and not just platitudes.

You were there to urge me to “go to the cloud” when I still thought the cloud was a weather pattern.

You were there when the world was turned upside down with a deadly pandemic.

You were there when I was so tired I could cry.

You were there because you believed in me and what we collectively stood for.

You were there and that has made all the difference.
