Peer support in a non-judgmental atmosphere is a source of support for families caring for a frail loved one or someone with Alzheimer’s. Our group leaders are professionally trained to lead groups which offer emotional support and practical advice for caring for a loved one. Free on-site care is provided during the meetings.

Early Stages Memory Loss Program

GEMS 1 includes a support group, exercise, memory strengthening exercises, guest speakers and lunch. Members share experiences with other facing similar challenges and learn about resources to assist them.

Eastern Long Island Brain Aneurysm Support Group

This support group offers group discussions and educational lectures for survivors, family members and caregivers of patients recovering from subarachnoid hemorrhage, aneurysm treatments and AVMs.

Epilepsy Support Group

Come share your experience, concerns and join in a discussion about epilepsy. Co-led by a social worker from the epilepsy foundation, and Dr. Bhumike Balgobin, a neurology resident at Stony Brook Medicine, each session is largely participant directed. Light refreshments are served. Free. This is open to all patients, family members and caregivers.

Powerful tools for Caregivers

Being an effective caregiver starts with caring for yourself. Families caring for individuals with chronic illnesses are invited to join us for this educational experience to learn techniques for self-care and empowerment and participate in hands-on activities such as exercise, nutrition, and art. The final session will include guided imagery in a local salt cave.

Senior Adult Day Programs

The Denise & Robert Silverberg Family Friendship Circle and GEMS II programs provide a structured, stimulating environment that encourages social cognitive and physical stimulation through a variety of group activities for those with memory or functional impairment as result of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Stroke, etc. Coffee, snacks and a hot kosher lunch will be provided.

The responsibility of taking care of a loved one often falls on the shoulders of someone special – a Caregiver. They need support, resources, and their needs are sometimes overlooked! Family Service League offers groups designed to help those caring for a frail or elderly person to cope with the inherent stress of their situation. Attendees will learn new coping skills for stress, gain a better understanding of their role and options, and receive help securing any assistance to resources that may be available.

Stroke Lecture Series for Caregivers

Tuesday Talks is a mini-series of educational workshops, a program of the Caregivers Center, geared towards managing stroke rehabilitation. Child and Family Bereavement Support Group

Good Shepherd Hospice offers a FREE‚ professionally run‚ 8-week bereavement group program for children ages 4-17 years old and their caregivers who have experienced a death of a loved one. Children engage in therapeutic activities that encourage emotional healing‚ increase understanding‚ development of healthy coping skills and preservation of memories. Adult caregivers attend their own concurrent support group‚ where they will learn about the nature of their children’s grief and how to best support them.
